Core catchers

A core catcher belongs to NPP passive safety systems. It is designed for confinement of the reactor molten core and prevention of melt release outside the containment.

The core catcher consists of a bottom slab, a cantilever truss, a maintenance platform, and a vessel with supports. Inside, the core catcher contains a filler that is a sacrificial material of metal oxides and concrete.
