A solemn ceremony dedicated to the start of a full-scale construction works of the Akkuyu NPP took place in Mersin Province (Turkey) on April 3 2018. Russian President,  Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Erdogan took part the ceremony via videoconference. Folllowing the welcome remarks, the leaders of the two countries gave their permission for construction works. The symbolic button was pressed to mark the pouring of the «first concrete» into the base of the reactor building of Unit 1 of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant after the command of the Director General of ROSATOM Alexei Likhachev.

"AEM-technology" (a part of machine-building division of ROSATOM- Atomenergomash) is involved in the construction of the Akkuyu NPP. The Company will manufacture the first-class safety reactor equipment for two Units within the framework of the largest Russian-Turkish project.

Volgodonsk branch of AEM-technology “Atommash” starts machining of the vessel and the reactor cover blanks for Unit 1. Machining of shells and heads of one set of steam generators has already been completed and  specialists begin welding operations and anticorrosive surfacing. The plant will also manufacture four heat exchangers for the Akkuyu NPP Unit 2.

Petrozavodsk branch is currently carried out machining of  the coolant header for steam generators of the first Unit of the Turkish NPP. The incoming control is carried out on the shells of the Pressurizer, the blanks of the pipe units of the future main circulation pipeline, to which Petrozavodskmash has to deposit an anticorrosive layer. The vessels of the reactor coolant pump and emergency core cooling equipment (SAOS) for the Turkish nuclear power plant will also be produced in Karelia.

The Units of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey are being built as per project of a new  VVER-TOI  design with enhanced security and improved technical and economic characteristics. It should be reminded that, after a two-year break, JSC "AEM-technology" was the first manufacturer of NPP equipment who has received a certificate of official approval of the manufacturer. Certificate No. TR-10-003 issued September 19, 2017 by the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK).

The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is the world's first nuclear power plant project implemented on the basis of the BOO scheme ("build-own-operate"). In accordance with this model, Russia will build a power plant, will own and operate it. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four-units with Russian WWER reactors of the 3+ generation. The capacity of each Unit will be 1200 MW. The total volume of Russian investments in the Akkuyu NPP construction project in Turkey will amount to 22 billion dollars. As also previously reported the Turkish side expects to launch the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in 2023.
