The Volgodonsk Branch of JSC “AEM-technology” “Atommash” (a part of the machine-building division of Rosatom – Atomenergomash) has completed stamping of 16 bottoms for the passive core flooding system tanks for the first Akkuyu NPP Unit in Turkey.
The passive core flooding system is an essential element of the NPP safety system and is designed to remove residual heat in the event of a serious accident with loss of the reactor primary coolant. The weight of a passive core flooding system tank is 77 tons, its height is 10.5 meters and its diameter is 4.24 meters.
At the thermal and press section, a blank with a diameter of 5300 mm and a weight of 18 tons is heated at a temperature of 900 degrees for about two hours, then the heating temperature increases to 1050 degrees for another two hours. Using a special press-tool die, the red-hot blank is transformed into the bottom of the passive core flooding system tank with a force of 6000 tons-force.
After the control activities, the items will be sent to Petrozavodsk, where 8 passive core flooding system devices for Unit 1 of Akkuyu NPP will be manufactured.
Akkuyu NPP is the world's first nuclear power plant construction project being implemented according to BOO model (“build-own-operate”). According to this model, Russia will build the station, own it and operate it. The Akkuyu NPP project includes four power units with the Russian VVER reactors of “3+” generation. The power capacity of each NPP Unit will be 1200 MW.
